Welcome to Nederland Colorado 80466
They call folks that don´t live in Nederland "Flat Landers". The elevation is 8,236 and is nestled in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Its location is about 15 miles from Boulder straight up. Nederland is the Dutch name for The Netherlands which you may know means "low lands". Generations of Native American Indians have lived and thrived in what is known today as Nederland. Nederland has had many names; Middle Boulder, Dayton, and Brownsville. Nederland Colorado began as part of a Dutch Mining Company and was considered a secondary and warmer town below being 2,000 feet below the town of Caribou where the main mining had begun. Hence, in 1874, when it was time to officially name the town, Nederland stuck. Mining in Nederland consisted of Silver, Gold and later Tungsten which is used to make light bulb filament and X-Ray tubes. Today the small town is known for its access to outdoor recreation in the Indian Peaks and James Peak wilderness areas.
Nederland has a plethora of outdoor festivals including Frozen Dead Guys Festival which is a celebration of re-newable life and re-birth among other things. Miners Days, Nederland High Peaks Art Festival are also popular festivities in the Nederland area. The area is also quite known for its backpacking, fishing, and biking, camping and wonderful hiking trails. Nederland is also great for all the winter sports Colorado has to offer. In 2006 the estimated full time population was just over 1,000 and 1.5 square miles of land.
Getting to Nederlands is a breeze with the daily Nederland RTD Bus Service to and from Boulder. This small town also has a Nederland Chamber of Commerce which works with visitors centers as well as the local commerce. They do a terrific job of promoting the small towns local festivals, cultural and environmental events.
With beautiful vistas of Golden Aspens in the fall, summer is not the only time of year Nederland shines. Many come during the dry and warm days of fall months for hiking and biking. Nederland has over 5 Hotel/Motels and lots of restaurants, unique cafes and plenty of coffee houses. The fine restaurants have live entertainment on the weekends all year round. The award winning Nederlands Mountain-Ear newspaper will keep you updated on what goes on and when in Nederland Colorado. It is truly an interesting paper celbrating the 150 years of the town.
The Nederland community has all the benefits of a small town with all the amenities of larger more populated towns. Included in the daily goings on of Nederland is a Senior Center, Lions Club, Theater, community center and a healthy Library.
The small town has a fantastic Youth and Family Center, and about a year ago the youth got together and petitioned for a skate board park to be built. In May of 2008, they received their goal of $500,000 to build it. Construction started the summer of 2008.
